Study: Roll-Your-Own Cigarettes Are More Addictive

People on diet are always told to eat at home rather than in restaurants since preparing your own food allows you to put only what’s good for you on your plate. This, however, does not apply on other DIY stuff, including preparing your own cigarettes.

roll-your-own cigaretteA recent New Zealand study shows that roll-your-own cigarettes may be more addictive than factory-made cigarettes. This may be due to to their higher ratio of tar to nicotine. The study was done by Victoria University PhD graduate Amy Lewis, who looked into other components in tobacco and its dangers, unlike many other studies done before that only focus on nicotine and how it affects one’s well-being. The research of Dr. Lewis studies the effect of other non-nicotine components of tobacco smoke.

Aside from exposure to higher levels of tar, not using filters and drawing more intensively may increase the level of addiction of roll-your-own cigarette smokers. The main reason some smokers prefer the rollies may be the price. Roll-your-own cigarettes are considerably cheaper than ready-made cigarettes.

The study conducted by Dr. Lewis may prove to be very helpful in determining why people get hooked on cigarettes and in developing new strategies to help smokers quit.
