Ricky Hatton Takes on a Different Battle

He has only been beaten twice in his career, and his family and supporters certainly hope that he will emerge as victorious in this latest battle that he found himself in. Only now, there is no boxing championship belt at stake.

Ricky HattonManchester native and boxing champ Ricky Hatton has been admitted into a rehabilitation facility Monday night. Hatton went into rehab in the wake of a video that was released on News of the World, which showed the boxer snorting several lines of cocaine.

According to a report on CNN, the former welterweight and light-welterweight champion has been diagnosed with depression and having a drinking problem. The boxer’s spokesman, Max Clifford, spoke to the UK Press Association, and shared that “Ricky’s father has been talking to the specialists in recent weeks. He has been told Ricky’s depression is severe and that he has a drink problem. The drugs are recent and not actually the problem. The specialists are very confident if Ricky does what they tell him with the treatment, therapy and advice, he can sort himself out.”

Hatton’s last fight was against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas in May, 2009, where he was knocked out after the second round.

Hatton’s father Ray expressed anger over the coverage that his son’s troubles received, however. He was quoted by the article on the Guardian: “It’s a very public thing. We wanted to do it privately between the family. When you pick up the papers and you see what the media are saying, some member of the family or some unknown source has allegedly said this, you just feel that people are getting the wrong impression.”
