It is one thing to learn about adults getting arrested on drug charges, but it is downright disheartening to hear about kids engaged in this sort of thing. A report on UPI.com shares the arrest of two middle school students in South Carolina over cocaine.
According to the report, police were alerted to a possible drug deal at Rawlinson Middle School in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Thursday, through an anonymous tip. The officer who responded eventually discovered the two kids in a restroom of the school, and caught them with 4 grams of cocaine.
The two boys were aged 13 and 14, and had in their possession a plastic bag filled with white powder that, according to The Charlotte Observer, tested positive for cocaine. The teenagers were then arrested on charges of intent to deliver cocaine. Lt. Brad Redfearn of the Rock Hill Police said: “There is no age limit on somebody dealing or being in possession of drugs. On the street a lot of times they use the younger kids to hold the narcotic because they know the adults will get more time than the juveniles.”
Rock Hills schools Superintendent Lynn Moody expressed concern over the arrests, however, pointing out that the gravity of the charges raises concerns about the future of the teenage boys. Their ages certainly makes it rather impossible for them to become entangled with situation without the prodding or influence of an adult in the community. Moody accurately said: “Everything that is part of the community is part of the school… Students come to school with whatever issues are going on in the community.”
