Alcohol and Marijuana as Most Serious Substance Abuse for Teens


A press release shared the results of a national Teen Substance Abuse survey conducted by the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. A poll was taken amongst police officers and high school teachers nationwide, to get their opinion on the most serious problem substances that teenagers of today face.

marijuanaThe results of the survey indicated that police and teachers think that marijuana and alcohol are the substances that have the most negative impact on teenagers, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine. In response to the question “When you think of substance abuse, which substances do you see as having the greatest negative impact on teens?”, 70 percent of high school teachers, and 51 percent of police officers, indicated that alcohol and beer had the greatest negative impact on teens. Majority of police officers and high school teachers, at 82 and 88 percent respectively, identified alcohol as the most serious problem substance.

Meanwhile, 51 percent of high school teachers, and 69 percent of police officers, believe that marijuana has a negative impact on teens. Seventy-six percent of police officers, and 75 percent of high school teachers, said that the 2nd most serious problem substance for teens is marijuana.

The results of the survey were released after the FDA announced that it intends to place more restrictions on cough medicines, in an effort to reduce cases of abuse of cough suppressants. Interestingly, though, only 1 percent of high school teachers believe that cough suppressants and cold medicines have the greatest negative impact on teens.
