The world of sports has been plagued with issues of illicit drug use, and this has prompted the clamor for drug testing at athletic events. Rather controversial and well-documented is the rigid stance of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. regarding Olympic-style drug testing. In a previous post, we shared the results of drug testing performed at the “Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery” event in St. Louis, Missouri; one of the fights was that between Alistair Overeem and Brett Rogers. Drug tests from that event came out clean.
It is not surprising, therefore, that drug testing was also conducted at the UFC 114 event held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas last May 29. All told, thirteen fighters were subjected to drug testing: Michael Bisping, Mike Russow, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, John Hathaway, Dong Hyun Kim, Cyrille Diabate, Aaron Riley, Ryan Jensen, Efrain Escudero, Melvin Guillard, and Waylon Lowe, as well as main-card fighters Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
According to a report at MMAjunkie.com, all thirteen tested clean for anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs, as well as recreational drugs that include cocaine and marijuana. The results of the tests were shared with the website by the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), Keith Kizer. NSAC conducted the testing.
Testing is traditionally done by the NSAC on both main-card fighters, as well as all winning fighters and fighters who have previously failed drug tests but are participating in the same event. Some testing is done at random.
