4 Ways to Keep Your Children Away from Drugs

Most of the times, helping your kids avoid the danger of drug abuse means more than just telling them not to do drugs. With the real and strong influences they get from external sources – friends, neighbors, television, Internet – it takes a lot more effort to ensure that your kids stay away from drugs. Here we have outlined some important things that parents or guardians can do to help prevent drug abuse among youth.

family bonding1) Set a good example. Kids are smarter now. If you say one thing and do another, it undermines your credibility and your kids will not trust what you say. You need to show them by example what they have to do.

2) Encourage them to engage in interesting and more fruitful activities, like joining the school’s sports team, taking part in the glee club, or participating in youth organizations for a cause. These will give them the opportunity to enhance their skills as well as the venue to express themselves in a healthy way.

3) Work with school administrators regarding the school’s drug policies, and support its health programs. Your child will be in school most of the time, so it is best to cooperate with teachers and administrators in providing a drug-free academic environment.

4) Always open yourself to communication. It may not be a good idea to always hover around your child and ask him or her to talk to you every single time. What you can do is to always ensure that your child feels he or she can talk to you anytime. Leaving work behind when on the dining table and spending time to watch a TV show with them can be taken as good signs that you are available.
